Skype recently announced a new mobile app to go along with its voice and video chat offering. Skype Qik is an app that takes a page from traditional Skype but also from Snapchat. Users can record and send videos to their contacts, then receive video responses in return. But the videos can’t be saved onto the device itself. What do people think about Skype Qik? And how many would be interested in using it?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 11% of respondents said they often use Skype to make either voice or video calls. 14% said they sometimes use Skype. Another 20% said they’ve used it in the past but don’t use it regularly anymore. And 56% of respondents said they have never used Skype for voice or video calling.
There are other mobile apps available that give users the ability to make video calls. Currently, 66% of respondents said they have a smartphone or similar mobile device. And 11% of those respondents said they often use their mobile device to make video calls. 20% said they use video chat mobile apps sometimes. 17% said they rarely make vidao calls. And 52% said they never make video calls on their mobile devices.
But Skype Qik is not actually a video calling app. Instead, it lets people record short messages and send them. So how many would be interested in this type of feature? 14% of respondents said they already use an app that does this. 10% said they would definitely be interested in a mobile app like Skype Qik. 28% said they’d probably be interested. 34% said they probably would not be interested. And 15% said they definitely would not be interested. Current Skype users were 13% more likely to be interested in an app like Skype Qik.
