As services like Netflix and Amazon Prime gain subscribers, the number of Americans who buy and rent DVDs is starting to decline. Is video streaming already replacing DVDs? How many Americans are still buying and renting DVDs and how many have made the switch over to video streaming?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 24% of respondents said they have not purchased a DVD within the past five years. 23% said they have not purchased a DVD within the last year. 7% purchased a DVD seven months to a year ago. 10% purchased a DVD five or six months ago. 12% purchased a DVD three or four months ago. 14% purchased a DVD one or two months ago. And 12% purchased a DVD less than a month ago.In addition to buying DVDs, 13% of respondents said they rent DVDs often. Another 25% said they do so sometimes. 21% said they have rented DVDs, but don’t do so regularly. And 41% said they never rent DVDs.
Though many still buy and rent DVDs, 25% of respondents said they often stream movies and shows online or with services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. Another 17% do so sometimes, and 12% said they’ve streamed video but don’t do so regularly. 46% of respondents said they never stream video. 49% of those who have streamed video have a subscription to Netflix. 13% have a subscription to Amazon Prime. 10% subscribe to Hulu Plus. 11% subscribe to other video streaming services. And 38% don’t have a subscription to any streaming services.
So are video streaming services replacing DVDs? 27% of respondents believe they are already starting to. 16% believe they will eventually replace DVDs. 31% believe video streaming will not ever replace DVDs.
