Amazon Handmade Survey: New Platform Could Increase Buyers

Amazon is getting into the handmade market. The ecommerce giant recently announced a new online marketplace specifically for independent artisans to sell their handmade goods. This represents one of the first major competitors for Etsy since the popular handmade marketplace went public earlier this year. So how many plan to shop on Amazon Handmade? And how could it impact sites like Etsy?

Handmade Markets

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 8% of respondents said that they regularly purchase handmade items from online platforms like Etsy. 10% said they have bought handmade items online multiple times. 11% have done so once. And 72% haven’t ever purchased handmade items from online platforms like Etsy.

Handmade Buyers

In general, 46% of respondents said they would prefer to purchase handmade goods rather than those from large manufacturers whenever possible. In fact, the same amount of respondents, 46%, said they would even pay a bit more for handmade goods. And 49% said they would likely buy more handmade items if there were more online platforms that sold them.

Amazon Handmade

Currently, 49% of respondents said they buy products from Amazon regularly. 31% said they have done so multiple times. 9% have shopped on Amazon at least once. And 12% never have. Looking forward, 39% of overall respondents said they would be likely to buy handmade items on Amazon, now that the company has created a marketplace specifically for such items. Of those likely to shop on Amazon Handmade, 40% have made purchases from Etsy and similar platforms.
