Coffee and beer are both incredibly popular beverages on their own. But now, they’re even gaining some notoriety together. Coffee flavored beer has been around for years. But according to the Weekender, it’s gaining even more popularity with the rise of more specialized craft beer options. So how many coffee and beer drinkers also enjoy coffee beer? And what brands are at the forefront of this growing trend? We asked 1,000 respondents about their thoughts on coffee beer.
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest online survey, 53% of respondents said they’ve drank coffee within the past day. 9% have within the past week. 6% have within the past month. 5% have had coffee within the past year. 3% last drank coffee more than a year ago. And 24% are not coffee drinkers at all. More specifically, 78% of coffee drinkers said that they just drink regular coffee. 29% drink flavored coffee beverages regularly. 18% drink instant coffee. And 12% enjoy artisanal coffee on a regular basis.
On the other end of the spectrum, just 10% of respondents said they’ve had beer within the past day. 15% have drank beer within the past week. 10% have within the past month. 12% have within the past year. 6% said that it’s been more than a year since they last drank beer. And 48% are not beer consumers at all. Digging deeper, 71% of those who consume beer at least on occasion said they just drink regular beer. 32% enjoy craft beer. 23% enjoy specialty flavored beer varieties. And 19% like cider or soda drinks.
So far, just 10% of consumers said they’ve had coffee flavored beer many times. And 15% have tried it once or twice. Of those who have at least tried coffee beer, most could not actually remember the brand or specific brew that they tried. But some mentioned brands like Blue Moon, Sam Adams and Budweiser.Looking forward, 27% of respondents said they are at least somewhat likely to drink coffee flavored beer within the next year. Of those who have had coffee within the past year, 29% said they are likely to try coffee beer in that time. And of those who have had beer within the past year, 29% also said they would be likely to drink coffee beer in the next year. However, of those who just drink craft beer, 38% are likely to drink coffee beer.
Coffee beer is an idea that seems to be equally popular among both coffee drinkers and beer drinkers. And it does look like there are more people willing to try this growing trend in the coming year, so that’s good news for brewers that offer that style of beer. However, there aren’t really any beer brands that stand out in consumers’ minds when it comes to coffee beer. So there’s potentially an opportunity there for companies to set their offerings apart from other brewers. And for companies that are looking to get their coffee beer in front of more interested consumers, targeting craft beer drinkers specifically does seem to be the most effective route to go.
