When it comes to mobile apps, entertainment is a popular function for a lot of users. According to statistics from Nielsen, the apps that fit into entertainment categories make up a significant portion of the mobile app market. With apps that can do everything from streaming music to providing sports scores, it seems that entertainment apps are likely to continue gaining popularity in the years to come. But what do consumers think? We asked 1,000 respondents about their thoughts on entertainment apps and their experience using the various apps in this category.
Entertainment Apps
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest online survey, 33% of respondents said that they use multiple different mobile apps for entertainment purposes. And 17% said they use one such app. YouTube and Netflix were the most popular entertainment mobile apps mentioned by respondents. But some also use apps such as Pandora, Hulu, Candy Crush and Spotify.
Popular Functions
In general, 46% of those who have used entertainment apps said that those apps are their main sources of entertainment. And 70% agreed that mobile apps make accessing various entertainment options easier. Music seems to be the most popular function within the entertainment mobile app category. 69% of app users said that they’ve used mobile apps to listen to music. 54% have used mobile apps to watch TV. 52% have used them to watch movies. 37% have used mobile apps to read or access books. 22% have used mobile apps related to sports. Future Users
Looking forward, 38% of overall respondents said they are at least somewhat likely to use or download new entertainment apps within the next year. Of those who have already used entertainment related apps, 62% said they are likely to use those apps again within the next year. In addition, those who are likely to use entertainment apps in the next year are also likely to purchase things like dress footwear, candy products, SPF 50 or higher sunscreen and Walt Disney World vacations, according to Personality Radar.
Key Takeaways
Entertainment apps are popular with a fair amount of users. And the majority of those users seem to appreciate how easy those apps can make it for people to access their entertainment options on the go. However, less than half of mobile consumers said that they use apps as their main way to access entertainment. So what that could indicate is that companies would be better served to offer simple, straightforward apps that let people access a few easy features on mobile, while saving the more complicated or fully featured versions for other outlets. This seems to be the case for a lot of the apps that consumers mentioned, including YouTube and Netflix. So other companies could use these big names as examples of how to highlight just a few simple features for mobile consumers.
