Etsy Survey: More Open to Buying Handmade Items

Over the last several years, handmade businesses and independent artists have experienced somewhat of a boom. And much of that has been thanks to online marketplaces like Etsy. The company has grown so much, in fact, that it even went public and recently opened its own pop-up shop in New York. So how many people have bought and sold things on Etsy so far? And how many are likely to do so in the future?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 10% of respondents said that they have purchased things on Etsy many times. Another 16% have made purchases on the platform at least once or twice. And 74% have never bought anything on Etsy. Alternatively, 6% said they’ve sold things on Etsy many times. And another 7% have sold things at least once or twice.

Competition

But Etsy isn’t the only online platform that allows people to buy and sell handmade or artisenal items. 8% of respondents said they have purchased handmade or similar items from other online platforms many times. And 18% have done so once or twice. eBay, Amazon and Artfire were the most popular platforms for these types of items.

Handmade Business

In general, 50% of respondents said that they like handmade items more than mass produced ones. 52% said they would even pay a bit more for handmade items. 53% believe that handmade items are more high quality than mass produced ones. 71% believe handmade items are generally more special than mass produced ones.
