Amazon just announced a new program for Kindle owners that will allow them access to hundreds of thousands of books on their devices for about $10 per month. E-readers have gained popularity since the Kindle first launched, and many have been waiting for a program like this to emerge. How many will take advantage of Kindle Unlimited?
E-Readers
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 32% of respondents said they currently own an e-reader. The Kindle is the most popular device, according to respondents. 76% of those who own an e-reader said they own a Kindle. 20% own a Nook from Barnes and Noble. And 10% said they own other types of e-readers such as Sony or Kobo models.
Future Owners
Of those who do not currently own an e-reader, 13% said they would definitely be interested in owning one in the future. 33% said they would probably be interested in owning an e-reader at some point. 30% said they would probably not be interested. And 25% said they would definitely not be interested in owning an e-reader. In addition, 16% of overall respondents said that although they don’t own a dedicated e-reader, they do sometimes read e-books on other devices like tablets or laptops.
Kindle Unlimited
So what about Amazon’s new program? 10% of overall respondents said that they would definitely be interested in a service that lets them read unlimited e-books for a small monthly fee. 29% said they would probably be interested in a program like Kindle Unlimited. 33% said they would probably not be interested. And 28% said they would definitely not be interested. More specifically, 17% of those who were at least somewhat interested in the program said that they would buy a particular e-reader just to have access to such a program. 54% said they would consider buying a particular e-reader just to have access to a program like Kindle Unlimited. 27% said they probably would not buy an e-reader for that purpose. And 2% definitely would not. But of those interested in a program like Kindle Unlimited, 50% already own an e-reader and 77% of those own a Kindle.
