Landlines Survey: Use of Traditional Phones Steadily Decreasing

Verizon recently announced that it’s unloading its landline phone service. For years, people have been getting rid of their landlines in favor of cell phones. But there are still some reasons people choose to keep their landlines around. So how many people still have landline phones and do they plan to keep them around for much longer?


Landline Phones

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 61% of respondents said they still have a landline phone in their home. Though the majority of people still have one, there’s definitely been a decrease even just over the past few years. 71% of respondents said they had a landline in their home five years ago. 26% said they didn’t have one. And 3% are unsure if they had one or not.

Landline Benefits

Of those who continue to use landline phones, 53% said they like to keep them around in case they have to make emergency calls. 36% feel that landlines offer better security than mobile phones. 30% keep them around for the coverage. 9% said they don’t have a mobile phone or other phone options. 8% like them for the nostalgia. And 21% cited other reasons for keeping their mobile phones, such as just wanting an additional phone option and being locked into landline phone service contracts.

Future Use

Currently, 9% of landline users said they don’t own a mobile phone in addition to their landline. Another 9% said they only ever use their landline phone. 24% said they use their landline more often than they use their mobile phone. 22% said they use both phones equally. 29% said they use their mobile phone more often. And 7% said they only ever use their mobile phone. Looking forward, 65% of landline customers still expect to have their landline phones in five years. 20% said it’s unlikely that they’ll still have a landline in their home in five years. And 15% were neutral or completely unsure.
