November is National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, a monthlong event that encourages writers to complete an entire novel over the course of a month. Participants are encouraged to share their progress and offer motivation and accountability to their fellow writers. So how many plan to participate in NaNoWriMo this year and in the future?

NaNoWriMo

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 2% of respondents said that they are currently participating in NaNoWriMo. Another 3% said they have participated in the past. 9% haven’t participated, but know what it is. 7% have just heard of NaNoWriMo. And 79% have never even heard of it.

Future Participants

After learning about NaNoWriMo and what it’s all about, 19% of those who have not yet participated said they would be likely to do so at some point in the future. 61% said they would be unlikely to participate in the future. And 20% are neutral or undecided.

Achieving Goals

Even though some people are less than enthusiastic about the possibility of writing an entire novel in a month, a fair amount of people are interested in writing one on a different sort of timeline. 43% of respondents said that they are interested in writing a book at some point. But just 21% said they’ve actually taken steps toward writing one. In general, 42% said that they’re more likely to achieve their goals if they have an organized group to hold them accountable, which is similar to what NaNoWriMo provides.
