Pet Products Survey: People More Likely to Dress Up Dogs Than Cats

It’s National “Dress Up Your Pet” Day! Lots of pet owners purchase clothing, costumes and various other specialty products for their animals. And many of those pet products have grown in popularity in recent years. So how many pet owners regularly purchase clothing and other types of specialty pet products? And what are their favorite brands and stores?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 38% of pet owners said they just own one pet. 24% own two. 16% have three pets. And 23% have four or more animals in their homes. Dogs and cats were actually equally as popular. 62% of respondents said they own dogs. And another 62% own cats. 16% own other types of pets such as fish, birds and rabbits.

Overall, just 6% of respondents said they often dress up their pets in clothing or costumes. 15% said they dress up their pets sometimes. 17% rarely do. And 63% never do. Dog owners were more likely than cat owners to dress up their pets at least on occasion. But clothing and costumes aren’t the only specialty pet products available for purchase. 33% of pet owners said they purchase brand name pet toys. 18% buy organic food. 16% buy designer beds, blankets or rugs. 6% have purchased monitoring equipment. And another 6% have bought other types of specialty products such as special diet dog food and vitamins. Cat and dog owners were equally as likely to buy specialty pet items.

Pet Brands

Pet owners cited several different go-to brands for their pet food and supplies.
