Today is National Radio Day. And although the radio is slightly less popular than it was years ago, due in part to new technology like streaming services and satellite radio, it’s still one of the most common ways for people to listen to music, sports and so many other types of programming. So how many people still listen to the radio on a regular basis? And what other types of media are the most prominent?
Radio Listeners
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 31% said they still listen to traditional AM/FM radio every day. 27% do so a few times a week. 8% just listen about once a week. 7% listen a few times a month. 16% of respondents said they rarely ever listen to traditional radio anymore. And 11% never do. So just how much have things changed over the past few years? 36% of respondents said they listen to the radio about the same amount as they did a few years ago. 29% actually listen more often. And 35% said they listen less often than they did five years ago.
Types of Programming
Music is certainly the most popular type of radio programming; 80% of listeners said they regularly tune in to music on the radio. 24% listen to talk radio. 14% listen to sports. 13% listen to public radio. 5% listen to lifestyle programs. And just 2% listen to other types of programming.
New Media
So while it seems that the report’s of radio’s demise might be a bit exaggerated, there are still other types of media that provide similar offerings. And many of them are gaining popularity. 27% said that they listen to radio stations online at least once a week. 21% regularly listen to satellite radio. 33% listen to music streaming services like Pandora and Spotify at least once a week. And 18% regularly listen to podcasts.
