DVD Kiosk company Redbox has recently announced plans to team up with Verizon to provide a video streaming service that some say could rival Netflix. Limited plans for the project have been announced, but the industry is already buzzing about the collaboration. Will customers be interested in a new streaming company, or are they happy with what’s already available?

Redbox Kiosks

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 62% of respondents said that they have never rented a DVD using Redbox. 27% said they have in the past, and 11% said they rent from Redbox regularly. 51% of respondents who have tried both DVD's and streaming said they prefer video streaming over renting DVD’s, while 26% prefer renting DVD’s, and 22% had no preference.

Streaming Users

However, 63% of respondents said they have never subscribed to a video streaming service such as Netflix. 15% said they have in the past, and 22% said they are current subscribers. Though many streaming services can be used on a number of different devices, 79% of those who do subscribe said they stick with a computer or laptop. Another 58% said they stream through their TV or through a gaming system attached to their TV. 22% use a phone or iPod and just 10% use a tablet.

Subscriber Satisfaction

Overall, many Netflix subscribers seem fairly pleased with the quality of their streaming services, but there might be a few weak points where Redbox streaming could have the advantage. 90% of subscribers were satisfied with the ease of use of their current streaming provider. 69% were satisfied with the price, 77% were satisfied with the selection of older content, and 59% were satisfied with the selection of newer content. There might be some room for improvement for current streaming providers, but Redbox and Verizon will be facing some heavy competition when they launch their new service.
