Early Holiday Shopping Survey: Most Early Shoppers Buying Items Online

The official start of the holiday shopping season is still several weeks away. But some people choose to get an early start on their gift buying. And each year, it seems like more and more advertisers are trying to target those early shoppers with holiday themed ads. So how effective are these ads? And how many plan to take part in early holiday shopping?

Early Shoppers

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 5% of respondents said they’ve already finished all of their holiday shopping for the year. 7% said they’ve done most of their holiday shopping. 4% said they’ve done about half of it. 16% said they’ve done a little bit of their holiday shopping for the year. And 57% said they haven’t done any. The remaining 13% said they don’t do any holiday shopping at all. Those numbers are similar to those collected around this time last year. In a November 2013 survey, 4% said they had finished all of their holiday shopping, but just 50% hadn’t done any of it yet.

Online Shopping

Of course there are a few different ways people can shop for holiday gifts. In recent years, more and more people have turned to online stores to buy their holiday items. And it seems that trend is continuing for early shoppers this year. 68% of those who have done at least a little of their gift shopping so far this year said they have bought items online. 58% said they have done their early gift shopping in stores. And 2% have bought items using other methods such as ordering from a catalog.

Early Advertising

In general, 20% of respondents said they have already seen many holiday themed ads for stores and holiday sales so far this year. 38% said they’ve seen one or two holiday themed ads so far this season. And 41% haven’t seen any.

Just 17% of respondents said they think these early holiday ads can be very effective. 44% think that holiday shopping ads before Thanksgiving can be somewhat effective. 29% think they are not very effective. And 10% think that early holiday shopping ads are not effective at all.
