Mobile shopping has been gaining some popularity for a few years, but it still hasn’t caught on with all consumers. Now that the holiday shopping season is here, how many will use mobile shopping methods to buy gifts for friends and loved ones? And what are the most popular ways people use their mobile devices to shop?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 13% of mobile consumers said they often use their mobile devices to buy products online. 25% said they sometimes shop using their mobile devices. 21% said they rarely shop via mobile device. And 41% of those who own a smartphone or similar device have never used it to shop. Those numbers have gone up a bit since an April 2013 survey, when just 9% said they shopped via mobile device often and 45% had never shopped via mobile device.
But there are other ways for mobile consumers to use their devices to help make buying decisions without actually using them to complete purchases. 13% of mobile users said they often use mobile devices in stores to compare prices or search for deals. 29% said they sometimes use their mobile devices for such purposes. 19% said they rarely use their mobile devices to compare prices. And 39% said they never do.
There are a lot of dedicated apps made for various shopping purposes. However, 52% of mobile users said they don’t have any apps related to shopping on their mobile devices. 27% said they have downloaded apps for particular stores. 22% have downloaded general coupon apps. 17% have daily deals apps. 15% use local store or shopping locator apps. And 6% use other types of shopping apps, like those for made to compare prices between different stores.
Overall, just 11% of consumers said they have used mobile devices to shop for holiday gifts this season. 56% have shopped online for holiday gifts this year. 48% have shopped for holiday gifts in stores. And 27% have not done any holiday gift shopping this year.
