Verizon recently purchased Intel’s OnCue television service, which could potentially allow customers to watch cable channels on more devices other than just their home TV. So how popular is mobile TV and how many would be interested in these types of subscriptions in the future?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 35% of respondents said they currently own multiple mobile devices with internet access. 36% said they own one smartphone or similar mobile device. And 29% do not currently own a mobile device with internet access.
So while the mobile market is sizeable, there’s still room for growth, which could impact the future mobile TV market. Just 9% of those who don’t already own a smartphone or similar mobile device said they definitely plan to buy one within the next year. 20% said they will probably buy one this year. 36% said they probably won’t buy one. And 35% said they definitely don’t plan to buy a smartphone or other mobile device this year.
Of those who do currently own a mobile device, 20% said they often use it to watch TV episodes or movies. 30% said they sometimes watch TV episodes or movies on their phone or mobile device. 20% said they rarely watch TV on mobile devices. And 30% never do. Tablet owners were 7% more likely to watch TV episodes or movies often, and those who own multiple mobile devices were 10% more likely to watch often.
But the majority of TV episodes available on mobile devices at this point are provided through streaming services like Netflix. What if more traditional cable options were available on mobile devices? 17% of mobile device users said they would definitely be interested in getting cable service that they could watch on mobile devices. 40% said they would probably be interested in such a service. 29% said they probably would not be interested. And 19% are definitely not interested.
