Netflix Originals Survey: Exclusive Content More Likely to Interest Current Subscribers Than Potential Ones

Netflix has just released a new original series, House of Cards, which will be available exclusively to subscribers of its streaming service. Are viewers interested in this type of original content from companies like Netflix? And could Netflix originals or other exclusive content have a major impact on number of subscribers?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 39% of consumers said they currently subscribe to at least one TV or movie streaming service. Of those subscribers, 90% said they subscribe to Netflix. 21% said they subscribe to Amazon Prime. 19% subscribe to Hulu+. And just 3% said they subscribe to other streaming services.

Of those who already subscribe to streaming services such as Netflix, 32% said they would definitely be interested in watching original shows created specifically for their subscription service. Another 50% said they would probably be interested in watching original programming on their streaming service. 19% said they probably wouldn’t be interested. And no subscribers said they would definitely not be interested in watching original shows on Netflix or similar streaming services.

New Subscribers

Of those who don’t currently subscribe to any streaming services, just 2% said they would definitely sign up for one if they heard of a new show they wanted to watch and it was only available there. 25% said they would probably sign up for a streaming service to see a new original show. 51% said they would probably not sign up just to see a new original show. And 21% said they definitely wouldn’t sign up for a streaming service just to see a new original show.

On the other hand, if new episodes of their favorite shows were to become available exclusively on a streaming service such as Netflix, 5% said they would definitely sign up just to see those episodes. 27% said they would probably sign up to see new streaming episodes of their favorite shows. 49% said they probably wouldn’t sign up. And 18% said they definitely would not sign up for a streaming service just to see new episodes of their favorite shows.
