Presidential Inauguration Survey: Viewers More Likely to Follow Coverage Online

This week, many Americans tuned in to watch President Obama’s second term inauguration. And many also followed updates and coverage online, both through social media and online news sites. How many chose to follow the Inauguration in the traditional way, and how many used technology to follow the day’s events?


Inauguration Viewers

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 19% of respondents said that they watched the presidential inauguration this week. Another 22% said they watched at least some of it. And 60% said they didn’t watch any of the inauguration this week.

However, 28% of respondents said they watched President Obama’s first inauguration in 2009. Another 15% said they just watched part of the 2009 inauguration. 57% said they didn’t watch the 2009 inauguration at all.

Online Updates

But in addition to watching the inauguration coverage, there were many ways for Americans to follow coverage online. 18% said they read online news articles about the inauguration. And 15% said they followed inauguration coverage on social media sites. Of those who followed inauguration coverage online, 62% also watched the entire inauguration.

Voter Trends

In general, 33% said they voted for President Obama in both elections, and 47% said they didn’t vote for him in either election. But of those who watched at least part of either inauguration, 63% said they voted for President Obama in both elections, and 20% said they didn’t vote for him in either election.
