Xbox Music Suvey: Streaming Gaining Popularity Over Music Downloads

Microsoft is planning the upcoming release of its Xbox Music service that will fuse music streaming with music download purchases. While many consumers have embraced digital music downloads through services like iTunes, and streaming through services like Pandora, could a service that merges these concepts take off? How many consumers might be interested in Xbox Music?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 37% of respondents said that they often listen to music through free streaming services like Pandora. 9% said they use music subscription services such as Spotify. And 32% said they regularly use download-to-own music services like iTunes.

Just 10% of respondents said they would definitely be interested in a service, such as Xbox Music, that merges all of these concepts into one service. 34% said they might be interested in such a music service. 36% said they don’t think they would be interested in using such a service. And 20% said they would definitely not be interested.

Music Variety

Microsoft claims that Xbox music will boast a larger variety of songs available for download than Apple’s iTunes. But 32% of iTunes users said that they are very satisfied with the variety of songs available on iTunes. Another 50% said that they are somewhat satisfied with the iTunes music variety. 12% said that they are somewhat unsatisfied. And 6% said that they are very unsatisfied with the variety available on iTunes.

Mobile Listening

In general, 62% of consumers said they often use their laptop or desktop computer to listen to music. 41% said they often listen to music using their iPods or MP3 players. 31% said they use their smartphones to listen to music. 12% use their tablets. And 25% said they use other types of devices, such as radios, TV sets, and CD players.
