Today is Earth Day, an annual holiday intended to remind people to be kind to the environment. Some choose to celebrate the holiday by recycling or taking part in other kinds of eco-friendly activities. And others try to be as environmentally conscious as possible during the rest of the year as well. So how big of an impact does Earth Day have on people’s habits? And how many try to be eco-friendly during the rest of the year as well?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 65% of respondents said they consider themselves to be at least somewhat environmentally conscious. 70% said they recycle fairly regularly. But just 26% said they regularly celebrate Earth Day.
This year, 22% of respondents said they are likely to do something to celebrate Earth Day. Of those respondents, 58% said they are likely to recycle on Earth Day. 44% are likely to buy eco friendly products. 40% are likely to plant trees. 26% plan to clean up parks or green areas in their communities. And 10% plan to celebrate Earth Day in other ways, such as conserving energy or attending Earth Day events.
During Earth Day and the rest of the year, businesses may be able to benefit from taking on certain earth friendly initiatives. 64% of respondents said they are more likely to buy products from companies that use recycled or recyclable materials for their products. 60% said they are more likely to buy products from companies that cut down on waste or pollution during the manufacturing process. 56% said they are more likely to support businesses that take part in global preservation efforts. Another 56% said they are likely to support businesses that take part in local preservation or clean up efforts. And 49% are more likely to support companies that donate to environmental causes.
Some brands have managed to uphold green images better than others. Our respondents named some of their favorite green brands, including Publix, Clorox Greenworks, 7th Generation, Method Soap, Subaru, The Honest Company, Burt’s Bees and Whole Foods.
