The number of consumers using “the cloud” is growing, according to Statista. And while the concept behind the cloud might seem elusive or confusing to some, it’s something that has made its mark on so many different online industries. So how many consumers regularly use cloud technology? And what are their thoughts on companies that offer various cloud based products and services? We asked 1,000 respondents about their thoughts on the growing cloud technology market.
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest online survey, just 11% of respondents said they often use cloud technology. 20% said they use it sometimes. 18% rarely ever use cloud technology. 31% said they never do. And 21% admitted that they don’t actually know what cloud technology is. Of those who have used cloud technology, many named big companies with cloud services like Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, Amazon and Microsoft.
It doesn’t seem like the market for cloud technology has increased in any significant way, at least not as far as consumers know. In a September 2014 survey, 10% of respondents said that they used cloud technology often. 23% used it sometimes. 15% rarely ever used cloud technology. 32% never did. And 20% said they didn’t understand cloud technology.
In general, 58% said they at least somewhat understand what cloud technology is. 60% said they worry about security when it comes to cloud technology. Just 35% feel more secure using cloud-based programs than others. 63% think that using cloud-based programs makes accessing information easier. And 37% said they’re actually more likely to sign up for an online product or service if they know it uses the cloud.
In addition, 45% said that they currently have a mobile device that they sync to a computer or online accounts. 72% said that they shop online. 71% use social networking sites. 62% use online banking. 44% play online games. And 31% use online photo or video sharing sites. Since many of those services or features use the cloud in some way, it seems that many consumers actually use the cloud more than they thought.
It’s safe to say that there are a fair amount of consumers who don’t fully understand cloud technology or what it can do for them. And the amount of consumers who understand the technology doesn’t seem to be growing in any significant way either. However, there are a fair amount of consumers who use cloud-based programs, even some without realizing it. So what this suggests is that companies that use the cloud don’t necessarily need to include that information in marketing materials in order to attract customers. And since a fair amount of people also have security concerns when it comes to cloud technology, steering clear of that terminology may actually be a benefit. There are a small amount of consumers who are actually more likely to sign up for products or services that use the cloud though. So for high tech companies that market products to consumers who tend to have a better understanding of the cloud, including that information is more likely to be a benefit.
